豫園始建於明嘉靖、萬曆年間，距今已有四百五十餘年歷史。園主人潘允端，曾任四川布政使。潘允端為了讓父親安享晚年，從明嘉靖己未年（1559年）起，在自家的菜田上，聚石鑿池，構亭藝竹，建造園林。經過二十餘年的苦心經營，建成了豫園。
「豫」有「平安」、「安泰」之意，取名「豫園」，有「豫悅老親」的意思。豫園初建之時，佔地七十餘畝，由明代造園名家張南陽精心設計，並親自參與施工，整座園林規模宏偉、景觀秀美。
現今豫園佔地2公頃，樓閣參差，山石崢嶸，樹木蒼翠，以清幽秀麗、玲瓏剔透見長，具有小中見大的特點，體現出明清兩代江南園林建築的藝術風格。
豫園內至今仍保存着「海派書畫」發源地—「藏書樓」、上海小刀會起義指揮部所在地「豫園點春堂」等歷史遺跡。歷代古人對豫園有「奇秀甲於東南」、「東南名園冠」等美譽。
眾多國內外政要首腦和名人都曾來到豫園參觀訪問，是上海一張難得的傳統文化名片。
