A wonderful Olde Worlde hotel built 1465 and situated in the middle of Colchester. Probably the worst breakfast that I have ever had at an hotel. Apart from the fact that breakfast is only served from 7-9 am the best tables were reserved for afternoon tea and we had to squeeze ourselves on to a small table in the middle of the room which you couldn´t get your legs under. Lost and found - my brother forgot an orthapedic in the room which I gave up at reception and said that it would be picked up in the next couple of days. When my nephew arrived to pick it up there was no trace of it. Facit: lovely building, terrible service.

The hotel is very poorly maintained. Iron rust came out of the tea kettle, I washed it many times and it did not go away. I am leaving the photo… Although it was cold at night, the heaters were not turned on. And the glass was broken and the air was leaking. I did not sleep all night with the terrible noise.

Bed was so hard and old. We ended up leaving a day early. Needs so much work doing to the rooms. Loud news for outside it needs second glazing.

On the plus side the breakfast was great, the staff were friendly and the hotel is in a superb central position. However, the room was very dated and didn't appear to have been refurbished since the 1980s. It was absolutely filthy with thick dust and dubious stains, the ancient mattress didn't fit the bed properly and had springs coming through it. The shower was the polar opposite of a power shower and only produced a lukewarm dribble. The tea and coffee was never replenished and the single tiny teacup in the room wasn't replaced with a clean one for the entire stay. The walls are paper thin so it was possible to hear everything going on in the other rooms. I wouldn't stay here again.
